There is almost no topic in the world, that when written about with the right mix of passion and good humor, cannot be interesting. I started my career in a public relations agency in Silicon Valley—developing press strategies, writing articles and pitching editors to cover topics of which I had not a clue. And yet I was mysteriously successful at it—working with companies such as Atari Game Systems, Hewlett-Packard and Tandem Computers.
I quickly realized that the key to great promotional writing is great listening. While I may not have had an in depth understanding of the finer points of silicon chip development, I was surrounded by people who did. My talent was capturing their passions on paper and helping them express themselves in words that “regular people” (myself included) understood. That is a skill that crosses industries and geographies—and I have done both.
Over the past 20 years I have worked both inside companies and as an independent writer and marketing professional. I have written about everything from healthcare and the food industry to software and politics. Today, I am still listening to entrepreneurs and corporate insiders describe their businesses and positions and then helping them determine how to best communicate both.
